Project 2: Innovative Packaging

This task is a collaboration project between the Design School and the School of Biosciences. We were required to propose and produce a packaging design for a selected project from SBS. Besides, we have to turn our design into physical packaging.

Progression 1.0
After having the information, our group started brainstorming the brand name. Since the provided given name is "sweet potato banana balls", so we came out with the name "Sweetpoballs" which is derived from the product name.

Once the brand name has been decided, we started doing the visual research together. Firstly, we look at the existing packaging of Kawan Food to study its packaging design style. After that, we do some visual research about modern packaging design style, which all the group members agreed with.

So we came out with two design concepts, one is the Kawan Food design style, and the other one is the modern style. The reason for that is we were not sure whether we should follow Kawan Food's design style or can come out with a different one.

Before we dive into the design works, we analyse the existing packaging of Kawan Food to learn more about the visual hierarchy and the necessary information for the packaging.

Progression 2.0
We started working on the design after the visual research and analysis have been done. We assigned the work evenly we decide each member came out with one design. We decide what design concept we wanted to work with.

And here is the final decision:
Design Concept 1: Kawan Food Design Style
- Shu Huan, Ellyn
Design Concept 2: Modern Design Style
- Yi Qing, Rebecca, and Ivy

Once the work has been assigned, we started working on the design part.
As my design is more toward Kawan Food's design style, I came out with two idea sketches.

The first design obviously looks like Kawan Food's style, the alignment, and information placement. For the second design, I wanted to deliver the sharing is the caring aspect of the brand in a more fun and younger way. I used the mascot derived from Kawan Food's logo. But in the end, I abandoned the idea due to the mascot usage issue.

Progression 3.0
Once the idea has been agreed upon by my groupmates I started working on it in Adobe Illustration. For this week, we show Mr.Shamsul the ideas from our group. By that time, I didn't manage to figure out how to present the brand name.

Fig 4.2 Attempt #2, 23/10/22

From the feedback given by Mr.Shamsul, I should try to move Kawan Food's logo to the side or below the brand name label. Besides, I still need more work on the "20 pieces" label.

After that, I did the amendment according to the feedback from Mr.Shamsul and added the brand name and Halal & No Preservative logo as well. Besides, I also added the doodles of banana blossoms in the background on the left-hand side. For the band name, I felt like the typeface of the brand name looks not so suitable for the product so I tried a more rounded and bold typeface. In the final design outcome, I moved back Kawan Food'logo to the top again, because Mr.Shamsul said people need to see the logo first before the brand name.

Coming to the back design, I adapted the colour scheme from the front design. For the information, I studied the existing packaging from Kawan Food to learn more about how they lay out them in real packaging.

So this is the outcome of the back design. The nutrition facts label is generated by using a website: Online Labels based on the given information from SBS students.

For the second attempt, I adapted the doodles that were introduced in the front design to the back design. Besides, I also found some information errors from the SBS students, so I amended them after they provide the correct information.
