Design Principle - Project 3
Week 10 - 26th October 2021
By doing this project, I have learned more about how to create a good composition and also improve my ability of observation by doing the practice of visual analysis. This project is really helpful for me not just about how to create a good work but also learn more a bout how to read the story of other's work. Besides, through the feedback from Ms.JinChi I have also learned about how to choose a proper and suitable format for my work.

Lecture:
What is Visual Analysis?
- It is a method of understanding design that focus on the visual elements and principles.
- In its strictest definition - a description and explanation of visual structure for its own sake.
- The purpose of visual analysis can also recognise the choice that a designer made in creating the design and also to better understand hoe the formal properties of a design communicate ideas, content, or meaning.
- It is a critical part of visual literacy, skill that helps people read and critically interpret images.
- Practising visual analysis sharpens critical judgment skills and helps people seek out answers instead of passively receiving information.
How does Visual Analysis work?
- Phase 1: Observation
It means closely looking at and identifying the visual elements of a design and trying to describe them carefully in your own words. The observation phase is about looking, thinking, and finding good language. Do not assume that you know about the subject matter or the meaning behind the design.
- Phase 2: Analysis
It requires you to think about your observations and try to make statements about the worked based on your observation evidence. Combine how the specific visual elements that you've identified together to create a whole, and what effect that whole has on the viewer. How your eye is led through the work and why?
- Phase 3: Interpretation
In this final phase, your observations, description, and analysis of the work are fused with facts about the design work and historical context that you find in trustworthy published sources.
What's the meaning of the design and what was the purpose for it to be created?
Part 1: Visual Analysis
While choosing a design as my inspiration, I started planning what should I do for my design in Part 2. After doing a few hours of visual research, I chose a illustration of Mystery Shack by an illustrator - Mirelle Ortega. Mystery Shack is a place in Gravity Falls (TV Series 2012 - 2016) and Alex Hirsch is one of the artists.

PHASE 1: OBSERVATION
This design work is in portrait format without any borderline. As for visual elements, the main colours observed are yellow, orange, brown and purple. There are words at the left bottom corner and the centre of it. Besides, there are also some leaves with a few big words and tree at the foreground, mid-ground with a building place in centre and background with some trees applied in the work.
PHASE 2: ANALYSIS
The composition of this design work is base on the golden ratio. Follow the words at the foreground - "Visit Gravity Falls!", the movement of the pathway leads one to see the building at the central of the image and read the words on it - "Mystery Shack". We may focus on the details and the sign boards on the building and there is a native tribal totem pole just beside it. While following the pathway, there is a sign board at the right side - "NO Refunds". The big footprint right beside the sign board create a kind of movement which point towards to and leads one to see the forest in the background. Follow the repetition of trees from close to far, we can see there is two UFOs floating in the air, deep in the forest. Coming to the mid ground, there is a repetition of little flags across the image. Overall, this design work gives a sense of harmony in colour. There is layering hierarchy applied - first, we see the elements which are more close to us, followed by the things which are more far away.
PHASE 3: INTERPRETATION
This poster about Mystery Shack is drawn by an illustrator Mirella Ortega, it is a place in Gravity Falls (Animated TV Series 2012 - 2016). It was created by Alex Hirsch and his art team. The story behind it is that Mystery Shacks is a tourist trap located in Gravity Falls,Oregon, which overcharges unlucky tourists. In this illustration - The Mystery Shack, it is drawn into Anime Art Style and it was inspired by a combination of tourist traps and the attic of a "big old victorian-style house' next to Alex Hirsch's school (in real life) that was used for an after-school program for the likes who had to wait for their parents to pick them up. Overall, the design gives a warm feeling, but at the same time, the use of the dark and cool colour gives a sense of mystery. The well use of composition (golden ratio) interprets the harmonious atmosphere perfectly.
Part 2: Design
Week 12
The reason that I chose the illustration of The Mystery Shack is I wanted to create a piece of illustration of my dream which I wanted to do ages ago and I also want to take the reference of the well use of composition of it. My dream is about having a little red food truck in Central Park with my love. The reason that I chose autumn as the main season in my work is because I like the cool weather and the sight of fallen leaves. I tried to create a kind of harmony of colours, but at the same time the emphasis of the truck.

Week 12
According to the feedback from Ms.JinChi during consultation, she pointed out that the main object - the truck is more lean to landscape format, unlike the chosen design, the building in the centre is in vertical format. So if I put the truck in vertical format it will looks too cramp. Besides there is also a point which I was completely agree - it needs some life in the artwork. It looks like an abandoned park without living creature.
I did quite a lot of adjustment in the work. I changed it in to landscape format, added some characters and the falling leaves.

This art work is about my dream, which is run a little red food truck in Central Park with my love, and also in my favourite season - Autumn. With the breeze, the sight of the fallen leaves and the smile on people’s faces.
The composition of this design is base on the golden ratio and it is in landscape format. There is a dustbin in the foreground at the right bottom corner and follow the pathway, there is a bench and the street lamp at the left side. Coming to the mid-ground, there is the main object - food truck in the middle of the canvas and there is a repetition of trees and building in the background. After that, you may notice there is some fallen leaves at the right top corner which is to show more liveliness. Overall, this design work gives a warm feeling and a sense of harmony in colour.
