EXERCISE

Task 2: Typographic Exploration & Communication (Text Formatting and Expression)

Week 5
This week, we were required to do typographic exploration by using provided text, we have to choose one from THREE. At first, we should do some sketches of the heading design and then digitalise it by using Adobe Illustration.

After having some basic idea, I tried to digitise them in
Illustration.

The barcode in my work means "CODE".

Week 6
After doing some exploration last week, this week we should focus on the layout and arrangement. According to the feedback by Mr.Vinod, my heading design are lack of idea.

I try to use something relate to coding to design the layout. Follow the code means follow the subheading code. I put all the coding elements in grey tone to give more focus on the paragraph itself.

I have three drafts that have slightly different to each other which is the difference of the adjustment of sub-heading.

FEEDBACK

Week 6
General Feedback - We should focus more on the sketches and design of headline first, before doing the layout and other arrangements.
Specific Feedback - Lack of idea on heading design

Week 7 General Feedback - Specifc Feedback - Idea is present clearly, which is good. However, typesetting has issues in consistency (line length differs from right page to left page). Body text must always be treated in a consistent manner so that it is recognised as such. Thats said good attempt at trying to infuse your idea.

REFLECTION

Experience: While doing this task, I found that there is no right or wrong as long as you follow the rules and keep trying different things.

Observation: Neat arrangements is way more readable.

Findings: While doing this task, I need to pay more attention which means there is a lot of details need to take care of.

[A Type Primer 2] - by John Kane

*Notes #1: Every aspect of typography, even the most basic letterforms, combines image, history, and meaning.

Text type is defined as type that is presented at a size between 6pt. and 12pt.
Display type is type that is presented at a size of 18pt. or higher.
Keep in mind that display typefaces are intended to be'seen' rather than'read.'

*Notes #2: The letterforms themselves evolved as a response to handwriting the marks we make as we scrawl across a page, which is a characteristic of type design.

When it comes to written Chinese, unlike English, it is written in a series of characters called pictographs-form that express an entire word or idea without necessarily indicating how to pronounce it.

When using vertical type in a composition, keep in mind the properties of the letterforms themselves and set the type accordingly.
Remember that the vertical type's baseline can or cannot relate to the vertical axes suggested by the rest of your type.
