Design Principle:

Balance: It refers to the distribution of visual weight in a work of design and the visual equilibrium of elements. It can be symmetrical or asymmetrical.

Emphasis: It is use to create dominance and focus in a design work, the elements such as colour, shapes or value can used to create emphasis and also achieve dominance.

Repetition: It can create rhythm and pattern by using repeated elements of design. However, the variety is essential too to avoid monotony.

Movement: Which is the design that create the path way the eye follows by using elements such as shapes, forms, line, and curves.

Exploration:

After doing some visual research and learning from others work, I started with some roughly sketches as well. Same with the first exercise, I tried to use digital tools to make them look cleaner.

Fig 1.4 Sketches of Idea, 5 Sep.2021

The balance design that I created is a asymmetrical balance design. For the mountains on left are smaller but darker,  and the right sides are the opposite. I try to create visual equilibrium in the work.

After receiving feedback, I made this design become a symmetrical balance design. I make the mountains more balance in visual and also with same colour tone.

As far as I know, the most important thing of emphasis design is the hierarchy. I try to make the hierarchy become more obvious by using the different colours and volume. The first design is a big crocodile with a small duck. The second design is a big symbol of ampersand with high-contrast colour.

After received feedback from Ms.Jin Chi, I do some little changes on the word "ampersand". The words become slightly bigger and lighter to stand out from the background.

While doing this two movement design, I keep confusing myself with either this design is classified as movement or repetition. And finally I define them as movement even though they consist both principle.

Reflection :

I think that this exercise does help me a lot. I have a deeper understanding about these design principle, even sometimes I will still keep confusing myself. But with the explanation from Ms. Jin Chi, I knew that okay to get confused, the important thing is to find the answer and understand why.
