Design Principle:

Gestalt Theory -

Figure-ground : When we look at a scene, we separate objects. Some of us focus on figure and others focus on the backgrounds.

Similarity : Objects with similar characteristics are place in a group, these characteristics can include colour, size, font, shape or texture.

Proximity : The objects that close to each other are group together.

Closure :  he objects that are not necessarily together or complete in order to create a whole. When we look at a complex of visual elements, we will tend to look at a simply object or recognisable pattern.
Continuity : The theory that we continue to follow objects that are visually aligned until they are interrupted.
Order : The alignment and symmetry are attractive and essential elements of design.

Contrast - Means "different". It can be divided into two types, which is strong contrast and weak contrast.

Before start working on the exercise 1, I do did some online research and some case studies to get more understanding about gestalt theory. I found it's a bit difficult for me, but at the same time it's also new and fresh to me.

        Explorations :

Fig 1.5 Gestalt and Contrast design, 29 Aug.2021

After come out with some roughly sketches, I'm start thinking of using digital tools to finalise them.

After doing some research about gestalt theory, I realised that some of the principle are represent something or it is something. [Red Wine] was inspired by this [Martini House] design. There are two red wine bottle as the figure and a red wine glass as the background.

There are some simply exploration for the design of Contrast. I'm playing around with the contrast of colours, shapes and fonts. And I found that black and white are the best contrast in colours, it's clear and simple.

The picture below is my final outcome for Contrast design. The reason that I pick this as my final design is because it consists the contrast of colours, shapes and fonts. I think it would be the best expression for Contrast.

After receiving feedback from Ms. JinChi and viewing others work, I try create a new design which are more interesting than my previous work. I started doing research about colours.
I get this idea from the assignment from other module which is "type expression" and there is a word "pour". And I was thinking what should be pour out from the cup... "lemonade"- my favourite drink! So I decided the colour - yellow & violet.

        Reflection:

This is my very first time to know what Gestalt Theory is, it's really interesting and meaningful. Through this exercise, I got chance to get to know and do self-studies about it. At the same time I learnt a lot not just from the lecture and self-studies, but also from my peers' art work and the feedback from Ms. JinChi.
