EXERCISE

Task 3(B): Type Design & Communication

Week 11
In this task, we were required to create both static and animate greeting sticker. This week we will need to come out with a few sketches, we may use minor graphical elements or visuals aid in our message and design.

Fig 1.1-2 Related Visual Research

After doing some visual research, I started the work from sketching. I added some design elements of Christmas.

Week 12
After the consultation with Mr.Vinod, I decided to pick the 2nd design as my final design. While discussing about the colours, Mr.Vinod suggested me to experience with the background colours and the text colour inverted.

I tried to combined the twisted line and the background colour, so I come out with this idea. I made the words and the logo into hollow and drop the shadow, but it seems not pop out enough, the words and logo looks darker.

Week 13
After receiving feedback from Mr.Vinod, I made the tree more wider to fit into the square space. I reduced the size of the tree trunk. Mr.Vinod
suggested me to just make it a simple rectangle instead a triangle. After I experimented with that, I found that using a more rounded shape will looks more harmony in picture.

After decided to use the rounded trunk, I start working on the details. According to the feedback from Mr.Vinod, I used a darker colour to gain more contrast. Besides, I also added on the highlight to pop the tree out. As the requirements, we need a white border for our sticker, so I added it with a shadow to make it stands out more on phone (telegram).

In this task, we were required to do both static and animated sticker. After having my final static sticker, I started animate the sticker by using Adobe After Effect. I made the star at the top of the tree twinkles and a little movement of the words.

FEEDBACK

Week 11
Specific Feedback - I can proceed with the 2nd sketch of sticker. The idea with a twisted line is simple and it's working. Good idea to put the uni logo as the trunk. I can experiment with the background colours and the text colour inverted.

Week 12
General Feedback - Remember to put the white border.
Specific Feedback - The shadow will make the words looks darker (notenough contrast with the background), so just stick to the simply white colour. The trunk is not necessary be the triangle, the rectangle will do. The trunk size could be smaller, and the tree can be wider to fit in with the square.

REFLECTION

Experience: This is a very interesting and fun task, which we could create a sticker that we can really use it on phone.

Observation: While look at a design, we should look at the whole thing. If the overall looking is not working, then it will not work at all.

Findings: I found that this task gave us the freedom to explore and experience both design and techniques.

The attention to details requires to discipline. We should be aware of all the sloppiness and careless are not allowed. Every detail matters because, no matter what we're done, all the details will involved in out creative process. NO matter there is the quality or not, we have already lost our time. We must adhere to a commitment and  paying effort continuously during the creative process. That is discipline, and no successful design, regardless of style, can exist without it.
