LECTURE
Week 10
This week, we were focus on the transition in creating comic.
The narrative nature of the Juxtaposition we create, panel to
panel, which is called a moment of Closure. There are a set of SIX
transitions.
1. Moment-to-moment:
This is one of the most common forms; think of it as a blink or
two between seconds of a film; it can be used to slow down and draw out
action, however, if over utilised it can make your comic dull and
laborious to draw and read.
2. Action-to-action:
Another most common transition and also a workhorse of superhero
comics, is Action to Action. Really it's more or less a less finely sliced
version of Moment to Moment, and typically focuses on significant events or
movement from panel to panel, and over larger intervals of time between
moments.
3. Subject-to-subject:
It is a cut between to related moments, but focusing on a different subject
in the same scene.
4. Scene-to-scene
A Scene is a series of events that happen in one location, and continuous
period of time. A change of location or significant jump in time
between panels is considered the end of a scene and the start of a new
one.
5. Aspect-to-aspect
It can be an interesting way to jump around a scene, taking in key details
or letting the characters focus wonder. It's a good way
to introduce their environment to a reader.
6. Symbolic
The last one on the the original list of Six would be Symbolic. There are
mostly in various form, partial montaged depicting the contents of a
flashback or inner dialog.
Rolling Transitions
Instead of having panel gutters or boarders as separate graphical
elements at all, the images are melded and mixed together. Overlapping and
interlacing.
No Sequitur
The scenes are mixed together where readers are likely to find some meaning
even when none was planned and that leads them to be perceived by readers
more like Aspect to Aspect transitions.
ASSIGNMENT BRIEF - TASK 3
TASK 3 - PART 1: WEBTOON
Week 10
Before dive into the comic, the first thing we need to have must be
storyline!
At first, I was super confused with my story, I don't know
how to make is horror. But after consulting with lectures, and they
gave me some useful suggestions.
Once upon a time, the woman ordered a food delivery and went to take a
shower as usual. When she was about to bath, the doorbell rang, and she
hurriedly wrapped her body in a bath towel and went to open the
door.
When she opened the door, she saw the delivery-man looking at her with a
weird smile. After she took the food from him, she wanted to close the
door quickly, but there was one hand blocked the door. It was the
delivery-man who handed over the drink. After the women took it, she close
the door quickly and looked out through the cat’s eye. She saw the guy
stared at the cat’s eye and smiled strangely. The woman was so scared that
she ran back into her house.
At night, the woman was awakened by the doorbell while she was sleeping
(00:03). She walked to the door and looked out through the cat's eyes but
found nothing. She went back to the room and wanted to continue sleeping.
She was so scared and couldn't fall asleep, so she started playing her
phone. The doorbell rang again (01:02), and she ran to the door and opened
the door without seeing anything. It's just that she didn't see the shadow
appearing behind her when she closed the door. When she returned to bed
and almost fall asleep, the same thing happened again (02:01). She was so
scared that she wrapped herself in a quilt, no matter how the doorbell
rang, she vowed to leave it alone.
While she was asleep, the house suddenly went out of power, but the phone
rang. She looked confused, and at this moment, a rope was wrapped around
her neck. The rope was pulled up by a force, and she was hung up, and she
died at three o'clock in the middle of the night. Her phone drop in bed,
shows that she posted a status on Twitty, which she wished she could
disappear…
Week 11-14
After having my storyline done, I started with sketches, which
is the part that I spent most of the time with.

I sketched out my idea on tablet, and I transfer and finalised
the sketches in Adobe Illustrator.
Fig 1.2 Black and White sketches, 18 Nov.2021
I chose to add greyscale to play safe, instead of colours due to the
limited time I have and also the technical issues.

TASK 3 - PART 1: MOTION COMIC
Week 15
After having my final greyscale comic, I started the animation in Adobe After Effect.
Before I transferred everything into After Effect, I need
to adjust all the things again in the film size artboard and use as a
backup too. After that, I arranged the panels layer by layer for
animation use.

I ended up with 102 layers in After Effect.

FINAL SUBMISSION
*ps: I'm not sure why the black colour in the comic here (fig1.2 and fig3.1)
and Webtoon is not completely black. I did double checked with the colour but
it didn't worked. Please check with the fig1.3, fig1.4 and also the motion
comic. Thanks.
REFLECTIONS
Experience
This was a special learning journey for me as I never think that
I will and I am able to draw a comic because I'm not good at
drawing figures and writing a story. I think the hardest part for
me would be the software using, cause I never learn that
before.
Observations
Before learning and doing the given task, I never know
how people make a good composition and those awesome transitions.
But after doing the tasks, I think I'm able to create a basic one
but and know how a good composition be formed.
Findings
After 14 weeks of learning from Ms.Anis and Ms.Jennifer, I did
learn a lot about the basic of illustrations and before these I
never think that I would have chance to learn about all this. I
felt like this module is way more than learning illustration and
visual narrative, it's like the combination of all the skills that
we learn from other modules.
