Professional Development Week
10/06/2023 - 14/06/2023 | Week 08
In order to familiarize recent graduates with the careers and fields of work before graduation, the Taylor’s held the Professional Development Week for us to learn from professionals in different fields and to answer questions about their fields through a question-and-answer session.
I attended six workshops, which were:
“Financial Literacy for Fresh Graduate” by MAYBANK
Keynote: “Aspire to Inspire” by POS MALAYSIA
"The Art of Storytelling" by KAKISENI
"Maximize Your LinkedIn Presence" by BDO.
"A.I. in Digital Media" by MALAYSIAN ADVERTISERS ASSOCIATION.
"Digital Transformation and Solutions: The Importance of Making It Easy" by APLIKASI.
Each workshop provided unique insights that have contributed to my personal and professional growth. This career development week emphasized the importance of financial planning, current marketing trends, social and networking skills, as well as some valuable experiences that greatly inspired me. First of all, the workshop by Maybank was very thoughtful and useful. The session covered saving strategies and how to start implementing them. It made me, who is not yet financially independent, think deeply about the need to start planning for my financial future. The workshop highlighted the importance and benefits of financial planning and proper investment. I realized that I should take responsibility for my financial management, plan wisely for my expenses and savings, and prepare for future and emergency funds.
POS Malaysia's keynote session entitled "Aspiration Inspiration" was both motivating and inspiring. The speaker shared his personal experiences and emphasized the importance of perseverance and passion. The session motivated me to set ambitious career goals and pursue them with determination. After listening to the speaker’s' challenges and successes, I am convinced that setbacks are a natural part of life's journey and can be overcome with perseverance.
One of my selected workshops is “The Art of Storytelling” by Kakiseni which is particularly relevant to my field of graphic design. Storytelling is an important skill in design as it helps to effectively communicate information through visuals to the audience. The workshop covered different ways of storytelling and its effectiveness and the importance of emotional engagement. I’ve also learnt about the structure for storytelling, the preparation behind the scene and its additional success factors. This will help to design work that not only looks good, but also communicates effectively with the audience. Another takeaway for me was, "Never compare your story to other stories." This quote not only comforted me but also reminded me that everyone's story is unique. Instead of comparing yourself to others, make yourself better.
On the second day, I attended the workshop "Maximizing Your LinkedIn Presence" organized by BDO. The first thing that drew me in was the speaker, Ms.Syafiqah, who spoke with clarity. In addition, the workshop emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong, professional online presence. LinkedIn is an important networking and job search platform and a very useful tool for recent graduates. I learned how to optimize my LinkedIn profile to attract potential employers and connect with industry professionals. This included creating a professional summary, highlighting key skills and showcasing my portfolio. Implementing these strategies will increase my visibility and open up new career opportunities.
Mr. Hassan from Grab presented on how AI is revolutionizing content creation and consumption through personalized marketing and automated design, while also highlighting the importance of ethical practices. Similarly, Aplikasi's workshop, presented by Mr. Azlan, emphasized the importance of digital transformation and current trends such as cloud computing, AI, and AR/VR. Understanding the benefits and importance of digital transformation made me more aware of current trends and future developments.
Overall, the Professional Development Week workshops have been very beneficial to me. They provided me with practical skills and knowledge that are directly applicable to a career in graphic design. I feel more prepared and confident to enter the workforce with the tools and insights I need to succeed and grow in my career.
