Task 2: Decisive Moment

LECTURE

Week 6 - 1/10/2021
This week, Ms.Noranis just simply do a recap with us about what have we learned before. Until this week, we have already learned about character design basic, composition, perspective, chiaroscuro, rhythm and movement.

Week 7 - 8/10/2021
This week, we were focused on 3-Acts Structure which was related to our third task - Webtoon & Motion Comic.
There are three important things when it come to the basic of storytelling:

1. Central Theme
- It's the main ides or underlying meaning. A story may have both a major theme and minor themes.

2. Conflict
- This is what drives the story and create tension and build suspense, which are the elements that make a story interesting.

3. Characters
- A story usually includes a number of characters, each with a different role or purpose. There is almost always a protagonist and antagonist.
- Central Characters: They are vital to the development of the story.
- Protagonist: The main character of a story, who has a clear goal to accomplish or a conflict to overcome.
- Antagonist: They are oppose protagonists, standing between them and their ultimate goals.

4. Three-Acts Structure
  1. Setup: The world in which the protagonist exists prior to the journey. It usually ends with the conflict being revealed.
  2. Rising Tension: The series of obstacles the protagonist must overcome.
  3. Conflict: The point of highest tension, and major decisive turning point for the protagonist.
  4. Resolution: The conflict's conclusion, where the protagonist finally overcomes the conflict. Regardless, this is where the journey ends.

Week 8 - 22/10/2021
This week, we were focused on visual techniques - Transitions. The first thing we need to create comics is an IDEA! But how to come up with ideas? We may start from having a brainstorming and mind mapping. Organise our idea by using "4 wives, 1 husband"

ASSIGNMENT BRIEF- TASK 2

TASK 2 : Decisive Moment

Week 5
In this week, we were required to capture the unique and meaningful moment from any known narrative from published media. We need to create a minimalist poster by using Adobe Illustrator.

At first, I was really excited to start working on this project and I wish to use the moment of The Shining. But here, I made a BIG mistake, I misread the assignment brief, I kept thinking to capture a moment only but without "DECISIVE"! But as a working process, I have shown my progression to lecturers.

Week 6
In the progression sharing section, of course, the idea have been rejected by lecturers as what I expected. After receiving feedback from lectures, I rewatch the movie twice to find a really decisive moment. But unfortunately, I can't really find one, so I decided to change a movie.

I was inspired by my classmate's works which is about Snow White, so I decided to choose Sleeping Beauty because there is a really obvious decisive moment that I won't get it wrong again.

After rewatch the movie and some visual research, I start doing some idea sketching.

Fig 1.11 First Attempt, 5 Oct.2021

At first, I tried to use the stone arch door as the foreground of the picture, but I found it looks stiff, so I changed the composition and put the shadow of Maleficent in the background.

I felt that the green and the blue didn't have a really good contrast and it doesn't looks harmony. So I change the background colour to purple.

I turned it into black and white to see the hierarchy of the picture and I'm able to do some adjustment from that.

Week 7
After having a roughly sketches of the idea, I started using Adobe Photoshop to digitise the poster.

The first GIF that I made looks super weird, which the arm was too short like a chicken leg. So I adjusted it a bit, I move the spindle (wheel) more far away.

Week 8
According to the feedback from Ms.Noranis, it would be nicer if I make it white out the whole poster after Aurora pricked her finger and then fade out the white and reveal the beginning of the poster again.
