Exercise 1: Vormator Challenge
LECTURE
Week 1 - 27/8/2021
In our very first class, Ms.Noranis and Miss Jennifer gave us a warm
welcome and start briefing us about the module. At first we were informed
that all of the lecture materials and information will be provided on
TIMES, and Ms.Noranis started to explain the MIB in detail to us. After
that we were also briefed about our assignments and our e-portfolio.
Besides, Ms.Noranis also showed us some of the good example from our senior
and we were also be informed that we will create a motion comic which the
theme is "horror".
Week 2 - 3/9/2021
In this lecture, Ms.Noranis introduced us about character design.
Despite knowing that stylised design are what stand out the most, but what's make a character design unique? The first think came out from my mind is shape and colour!
By using the character from Disney "Aladin", Ms.Noranis gave us a more deeper explanation about the shapes they are given and how it reflects their personality and identity. For example, even Aladin and Jafar are both in a rectangle shape because they are the leading characters, but Aladin was given a more stable shape which has more ground space than Jafar and reflect that he is more reliable character. In the opposite, Jafar was given a more inverse shape which is more heavy on the top. So in the comparison, we may have an easy identifiable shape that make us have a contrast with good and the bad characteristics.

Colours are also so play an important role in character design. Colours have qualities that can cause certain emotions in people. And we also learned how to create harmony of colours by using the colour wheels which are complimentary, analogous, split, triadic and rectangle.

Besides shapes and colours, emphasis & contrast and harmony are also the key things in designing character.
Week 3 - 10/9/2021
This lecture we were focus on The Composition. Firstly, we were been asking a question " Why do some photos on Instagram looks so good and people are always pleasant to see?" The reason is those picture are with good composition and combined with design principle. From Fig 3.1, we may see the design principle such as balance, visual hierarchy, contrast or even rule of third are applied in the photos. So we learned that besides the design principle, a good composition is also a key thing.

The positive and negative space are important to a scene. Positive space refers to the brighter space and negative space refers to the darker space. It shows the contrast that improves the visual hierarchy of the composition, and that's what make a storytelling scene effective.

Week 4 - 17/9/2021
This lecture we were focus on perspective, Ms.Noranis use the painting before 14th century ( The Last Supper - Da Vinci and The School of Athen - Raphael) to gave us a well explanation of the theory of perspective. Perspective is important that used to create value and give a sense of depth in an Illustration. Besides, there are four types of perspective which are 1 point, 2 points, 3 points and 4-5 points (fisheye).

Week 5 - 24/9/2021
This week we were focused on composition. A good composition constituted by value tones, shapes, positive and negative - chiaroscuro and perspective / spatial depth. Besides, having rhythm in art is one of the most difficult aspect to achieve / explain.
"Good artists imitate, great artists steal." - Pablo Picasso
Ms. Noranis explain to us about rhythm and movement by using some abstract painting.

TASK 1
Week 1 - 27/8/2021
Our first exercise of task 1 is called
Vormator Challenge, which we have to create a character by using
the provided set of shape. We are only allowed to rotate, flip and
duplicate the shape and we are not obliged to use all the shapes. We
can also add, subtract, intersect or group the elements if
we want.

The first thing that I do for the exercise was try to use the shapes to create some faces of the character and pick one of them as my main exploration subject. Before continuing the design part, I started to create a story and background for my character.
Story/ background
This little thing is a plant elf name Dippy, it came to earth with a
mission which is to expand the forest area of the earth. Its super
power is healing plant diseases and brings plants back to life
by hugging the plant. When it is healing the plant, the little plant on
his head will start growing up little by little. Besides the mission of
expand the forest area, Dippy have a secret mission too. It needs to look
for an old plant fairy, which has a tree on his head, and lean from it.
Week 2 - 3/9/2021
In this class, we were required to trace the vormator shapes by using Adobe Illustrator to digitise our character. Before that, we were receiving the feedback from Ms.Noranis. She picked the first version of character in my sketches and she said it looks more balanced. But I have a different opinion with her, I like the character with wings which is in the Fig 1.6. So, I decided to do both and see what I got.

After tracing the shapes, I start this exercise with doing some research on colours of character. I focus on the character design which style are more similar to mine.

Besides doing research of character design, I also used the website that provided by Ms. Anis which is https://color.adobe.com/create/color-wheel & https://www.canva.com/colors/color-meanings/ to have more studies and exploration. After that, I started using it on my character - Dippy. As a plants healing fairy, so I choose to use macaron style colours. I also made quite a lot of changes of the face of Dippy, changing the colour of the eyes and the shape of the mouth, and adding the blush.

Week 3 - 10/9/2021
Following the progression from last week, we were required to create game card (front and back) for our character. Before start working on it, I do some research about game card design and also the some design that similar to mine (what I want).
Since my character Dippy is a little plant healing fairy, so I want to create a forest which looks mysterious and also in a darker tone to bring more contrast with the character. I try brown and also green at first but it doesn't looks good with Dippy. So I keep exploring which more focus on dark blue until I found blue pink looks more suitable to my character.

I want to create a card game (Fig 3.10) which have four different categories (God, Fairy, Human, Devil), and each of them have four or few cards. At the back of the card, it's something looks like a puzzle that when they are put together it will become a picture or something else.
I tried to make those elements in repetition to fit into background, but I found it feels too much which different from my imagination. So I gave it a second attempt. I added two more simple elements to make it looks more lighter than the previous one.

Week 4 - 17/9/2021
According to the feedback by lecturers, overall my game card looks okay and I need to add some texture or background for the backside of the card.
To match the theme and the character, I draw some little elements for the background design.
